Govt calls out army in Islamabad, after abortive operation, to break up Faizabad, sit-in

The desperate government called out the army after an abortive operation to disperse hundreds of activists of a religious group camping at an arterial traffic intersection of the federal capital since the start of this month.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Interior on Saturday said a sufficient number of troops, to be determined by the Commander of the 111 Brigade, were being deployed in the capital to assist civil authorities in maintaining law and order. The troops have been deployed in aid of civil power under Article 245 of the Constitution and will remain in Islamabad until further order.

Earlier in the day, the authorities finally launched an operation to retrieve Faizabad intersection from Tehreek-e-Labbaik protesters after weeks of negotiations and nudging by the courts, but the police action only multiplied the government’s problems amid a worsening law and order situation in Islamabad and other cities.

At the end of the day, at least six protesters had been confirmed dead, while more than 200 people – including protesters and law enforcers – were injured. All six fatalities took place in Rawalpindi and four of the deceased were identified as Zohaib, Jahanzeb, Irfan and Adeel. The other two were yet to be identified.

Two cars, including the one of an additional deputy commissioner, were torched in Islamabad in addition to several private motorcycles, while in Rawalpindi at least 12 police and two private vehicles, including a DSNG van of a private TV channel, were set on fire. A number of private buildings around Faizabad were also damaged.

Islamabad police clarified that no casualty had taken place in their jurisdiction and reports of the death of a police officer which several news channels ran throughout the day were untrue.

The operation launched by the police of the two cities and personnel of the Frontier Constabulary ended in a disappointing failure amid violent clashes between law enforcers and protesters.

Tehreek-e-Labaik using Facebook to incite hatred; social media ‘inaccessible’ in Pakistan

Major social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter have been shut down on Saturday in major areas of Pakistan, according to reports. It is being said that the decision has been taken as the Tehreek-e- Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYR) is using the platforms to incite hatred in the aftermath of the Faizabad operation, that is currently underway in the capital.

A statement issued later on Saturday by PEMRA stated TV channels to show sensitivity regarding the matter and stop live coverage of the operation. Major news channels have been taken off air in this regard.

Earlier, a video by TLYR chief Khadim Hussain, was making rounds on social media that reportedly triggered the Facebook shut down, due to the alleged hate speech that it contained.

With over 2.5 lac views and fiery comments underneath, it is evident that the video did manage to get the desired effect. Following are some of the comments on the said video:

A policeman was martyred during clashes with protesters, in Islamabad on Saturday as the security forces fired rubber bullets, and lobbed tear gas, at protesters who have virtually paralysed the country’s capital for weeks to disperse them from Faizabad Interchange.

The roughly 8,500, elite police, and paramilitary troops in riot gear began clearing the 2,000 or so demonstrators soon after dawn, with nearby roads and markets closed.

The sit-in by the Tehreek-e-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah Pakistan has blocked the main highway used by thousands of commuters since November 6, causing hours-long traffic snarls and enraging commuters.

The protesters are demanding that Law Minister Zahid Hamid resign over a hastily-abandoned amendment to the oath that election candidates must swear.

Demonstrators have linked it to blasphemy and claim the oath was softened to enable the participation of Ahmedis, a long-persecuted minority sect.

In the aftermath of the crackdown, protesters have also started gathering at key points across the country including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpur Azad Kashmir, Tando Allahyar, Jacobabad, Chakwal, Sabrial, Faisalabad and Gujranwala.

Religious activists’ sit-in on Mall Road paralyses City

• Protesters of Tehreek Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah, allege police personnel desecrated holy Quran, mosques in a raid on Peer Khadim Rizvi,’s residence

Both motorists and pedestrians faced immense hardships when the Mall Road was paralysed due to a sit-in by protesting activists and leaders of the Tehreek Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah, in front of the Punjab Assembly, on Saturday.

Charged protestors belonging to the Barelvi, sect assembled at Faisal Chowk (Charing Cross) under the leadership of Dr Ashraf Asif Jalali, the chairman of the Tehreek Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah, to stage a demonstration against what they called “desecration of the holy Quran and a mosque” by a police team during a raid on the residence of Peer Khadim Hussain Rizvi, a senior member of the Tehreek.

The protesters, who were carrying banners, flags and were chanting slogans against the government, alleged that around two dozen police personnel raided Peer Khadim Rizvi’s, residence on Multan Road adjacent to Rahmatul-lil-Alameen mosque and Abuzar Ghafari madrassa where they desecrated the holy Quran and mosques.

It may be mentioned that the Tehreek Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah, was formed after the assassination of Mumtaz Qadri, the killer of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer.

Addressing the protestors, Tehreek’s chief Ashraf Asif Jalali said the government had failed to fulfill its promises made during the sit-in staged over the killing of Mumtaz Qadri in D-Chowk Islamabad.

He alleged that the government, was involved in promoting un-Islamic trends in the country and the solution to all problems facing the country was in imposition of Shariah.

Jalali also accused the government of victimising members of the Tehreek, saying these tactics would not push them away from their mission.

Other speakers also grilled the government in their addresses and said they were ready to face any hurdle in their mission. They vowed to continue their sit-in until their demands were met.

During the sit-in, Charing Cross was blocked for every type of traffic which added to the problems of the citizens. Many ambulances were seen struck in a sever traffic mess.

Before Ramzan, frequent protests at Charing Cross had been a permanent pain in the neck for commuters and traders of markets at The Mall despite the imposition of Section 144.

Section 144 bars holding of protest rallies and political gatherings in the area but the district administration and Lahore Police are clearly helpless in implementing the Lahore High Court’s decision in this regard.

In recent protests, electronic media was absent from coverage which was due to a letter of District Coordination Officer Capt (r) Usman in which he asked the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to bar electronic media from giving airtime to the protests. He stated in the letter that protests could only be discouraged if they were not covered by electronic media.

Mall Road Traders’ Association President Sohail Butt had told Pakistan Today that they were unable to bear the situation anymore, and had decided to stop protests on The Mall on their own. He had said that more than 3,000 shops and business points were situated at Mall Road which were providing livelihood to more than 5,000 families.
